General Microbiology BIOL3200

Description: To introduce the science of microbiology with an emphasis on prokaryotes. Prokaryote structure, growth, manipulation and control, role in disease and contribution to our understanding of modern biology will also be discussed. You will become acquainted with these topics through lecture material, additional reading and laboratory experiments.
Course Prerequisites: BIOL1030 or BIOL1037, CHEM 1030. CHEM 2070 is recommended, but not required.

Students at the completion of this course: Will have a knowledge of morphology and be able to identify organisms based on simple criteria, understand cell wall structures of gram positive and gram negative bacteria, understand the integration of metabolic pathways and mechanisms of DNA exchange in microbes leading to an understanding the diversity of microorganisms. Also they will be intimately acquainted with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and my drawings!
